Your water well contractor will discuss with you any problems that may exist in your area; he will recommend well size and special techniques (if needed) in well construction to fulfill your water needs. Costs in drilling, as in any industry, are not arbitrarily arrived at; this is a highly competitive industry that requires very expensive tools and techniques. He will tell you all the materials that will be needed and give you a firm, written quotation on all costs involved. Remember, your water well contractor should be an upstanding businessman with a good reputation to uphold. One who will not compromise your trust and health for a "fast buck," he’s here to stay and needs your business as part of his armor against unfair business practices and cut rate dealers.
There are many existing unsafe and unsanitary wells to look out for. These are the 3 most common examples.
1. Hand dug wells — a large diameter opening often ranging from 2’ – 4’. We have seen some of these types of wells covered with plywood before rodents and insects can gain access into and become trapped in the well, causing bacteria to form. Not to mention the unsafe construction of these wells could be fatal to small children.
2. Driven wells — a small, handmade diameter pipe driven into the ground. This type is typically shallow in depth acquiring surface water only. It can be laden with bacteria, nitrate and other harmful chemicals.
3. Improperly constructed wells — can allow access for bacteria to infest and reproduce in your well contaminating various aquifers and even neighboring wells.
